Making journeys to school safer for everyone
We are making journeys to school safer by implementing physical road safety measures around schools and neighbourhoods.
Safer Streets and School Journeys is a programme of safety measures tailored to individual schools and local neighbourhoods, such as changes to junctions, traffic filters, safer crossings and road space reallocation, using £2.7m of clean air zone revenue.
An initial budget of £1m is being made available to support the development and delivery of projects with at least 20 schools.
The measures will be small-scale but high impact, reducing road harm risk and improving quality of life, as well as responding to community concerns.
Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We are asking schools to send expressions of interest in the scheme, detailing what the particular safety concerns are and where they think measures might be needed.
“Interventions will vary as they will be designed to address concerns that are specific to each school and locality. They could include pavement protection, creating pedestrian areas, gateways on the approach to schools and improvements to the public realm such as seating areas, to name just a few.
“These small changes can make a huge difference in making communities safer and also provide good value for money.”
The first year of the Safer School Journeys programme is expected to develop and deliver schemes with around 20 schools followed by an annual programme.
