New waste collection fleet now fully operational

Published: Thursday, 23rd October 2025

The full fleet is now in operation across the city, sporting distinctive new branding that residents will see on their streets.

This £30 million investment represents a landmark in the modernisation of Birmingham’s waste management services and stands as the largest single procurement of refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) ever undertaken in the UK. The new fleet replaces a combination of ageing council-owned vehicles, many of which had exceeded their operational lifespan, and hired vehicles previously used to keep services running. By moving to a fully owned, modern fleet, the council has reduced its reliance on hired vehicles, improved reliability, and strengthened consistency in household waste and recycling collections.

A fleet designed for Birmingham’s needs
The vehicles have been specifically built to handle the city’s varied road layouts and neighbourhoods. A range of sizes ensures they can navigate Birmingham’s streets efficiently and safely. While diesel-powered, all vehicles meet the latest emissions standards and are fully compliant with the city’s Clean Air Zone requirements, supporting Birmingham’s ongoing commitment to improving air quality.

Enhanced safety and crew welfare
The fleet is equipped with modern safety features, including 360-degree camera systems to boost visibility and protect both crews and the public. Low-level access points make entering and exiting the vehicles safer and easier, further reducing risks to staff.

Supporting local jobs and skills
The majority of the fleet was manufactured in the Midlands, underlining Birmingham’s commitment to supporting UK industry and jobs. The distinctive vehicle wraps were also delivered by local companies, ensuring that this investment benefits not only Birmingham’s residents through improved services but also the wider regional economy.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "The arrival of this fully branded, state-of-the-art fleet is a big step forward for Birmingham. These vehicles will give our crews the tools they need to deliver a more reliable, efficient service while also supporting the city’s environmental goals. We’re proud to be investing in modern equipment that benefits both residents and staff, as well as backing local businesses and jobs here in the Midlands."

Richard Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director of Dennis Eagle, said: "It is fantastic to know the full fleet of vehicles is now in service across Birmingham. Designed to deliver exceptional reliability, safety, and performance, we are confident the RCVs will support the city’s waste management operations for many years to come. Our partnership with Birmingham City Council is built upon a shared commitment to operational excellence and environmental responsibility."

The delivery of this fleet supports Birmingham City Council’s wider goals of improving frontline services and contributing to a more sustainable future. By investing in modern, high-performing equipment, the council is ensuring residents benefit from a consistent, high-quality waste collection service.
