Birmingham Honours Local Heroes at British Empire Medal Investiture

Published: Wednesday, 1st October 2025

Birmingham City Council is proud to celebrate two outstanding residents who will be honoured with the British Empire Medal (BEM) at a special investiture ceremony on Thursday 25 September 2025.

The ceremony, hosted by the Lord-Lieutenant for the West Midlands, Derrick Anderson CBE, will recognise eleven recipients from across the region for their exceptional service to their communities. Among them are Mr Mirza Khudadad Ahmed and Dr Peter Paul Mayer, whose tireless dedication has made a lasting impact on the lives of Birmingham residents.

Mr Mirza Khudadad Ahmed, a Home Office employee and respected community figure, has helped over 300 individuals return to their countries of origin, many of whom lacked UK status and faced complex legal and logistical barriers. His work has bridged gaps between communities and government institutions, enabling safe and dignified returns to countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Algeria, and Afghanistan.

Dr Peter Paul Mayer, a retired consultant physician, continues to serve Birmingham’s healthcare system through leadership roles in local charities and NHS governance. His contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including championing flu vaccinations and advising on Long Covid clinics, exemplify his enduring commitment to public health and wellbeing.

Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, said:

“We are incredibly proud of Mirza Ahmed and Dr Peter Mayer, whose compassion and commitment reflect the very best of Birmingham. Their work has touched hundreds of lives and strengthened our communities. The British Empire Medal is a fitting tribute to their service, and we thank them for making Birmingham a better, fairer city for all.”

The Council extends its congratulations to all recipients and encourages residents to nominate others who make a difference in their communities.
