PSPO comes into effect in Lozells, East Handsworth, Soho, Moseley and Kings Heath

Birmingham City Council has implemented public space protection orders (PSPO) in Lozells, East Handsworth, Soho, Moseley and Kings Heath, which come into effect Tuesday 1 October.

People who live or work in or visit Lozells, East Handsworth, Soho, Moseley and Kings Heath were asked to share their views in a consultation on the plans to introduce measures to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Public space protection orders are there to protect the community and prohibits anti-social behaviour activities being carried out in public spaces.

In Lozells, East Handsworth and Soho, the order prohibits the following:

  • Groups causing anti-social behaviour
  • Being under the influence of intoxicating substance and/or alcohol while in a public place, and
  • Obstructing footpaths and inappropriate use of bus shelters.

In Moseley and Kings Heath, the order prohibits the following:

  • Groups causing anti-social behaviour
  • Being under the influence of intoxicating substance and/or alcohol while in a public place, and
  • Damage or destruction of property (graffiti).

Councillor Nicky Brennan, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, said: “After consultation with the local communities, it was evident there was a requirement for a PSPO in these areas.

“The PSPOs will hopefully deter anti-social behaviour and make the lives of those living and working in Lozells, East Handsworth, Soho, Moseley and Kings Heath easier.

“If anyone see anyone breaking these conditions, we urge you to inform the police on 101.”

Superintendent Sally Simpson, from Birmingham Local Policing Area, said "We want Lozells, East Handsworth, Soho, Moseley and Kings Heath to be safe and welcoming places. We'll continue to work with partners to make sure this is the case."
