Treatment centre cycle route – phase 4
Phase 4 of the A457 Dudley Road improvement scheme will complete the missing section of the cycle route built during earlier phases.
It will introduce a new protected cycle route (kept separate from cars, and people walking and wheeling) along the front of the former City Hospital and Birmingham Treatment Centre, between Aberdeen Street and Western Road.
We have agreed with Homes England and Sandwell and Birmingham NHS Trust to use the land needed to build the new cycle route. When finished, the route will become part of the public highway.
The project will also permanently close vehicle access to the Hospital and Treatment Centre from Dudley Road. A new shared footway and cycleway will connect Dudley Road to the Birmingham Treatment Centre and the future housing development on the former City Hospital site.
Proposals for the cycle track and shared-use footway were advertised on 30 October 2025.
Work on the new segregated cycle track will start in November 2025 and is expected to finish in spring 2026.
