Carers’ breaks and respite care
Respite care means taking a break from caring and taking time out to look after yourself.
Local councils may only fund respite care for people that they have assessed as needing it.
Find out more about respite care funding and charges.
Day centres (day opportunities)
Adult day centres can give carers and family members easy access to respite from their caring responsibilities.
They can help people living with dementia to socialise, stay mobile and get involved in a range of activities designed to promote health and wellbeing.
Read a real-life story about how art therapy helped someone living with dementia.
Attending a day centre could be part of a care plan or respite care.
Day centres can be provided by:
- your local council
- private companies
- charitable organisations
To attend a day centre, the person you look after will need to have had a needs assessment.
Most people will have to pay something towards the cost of their care, and the amount they pay will depend on many factors. Councils will assess if, and how much, someone will need to pay.
