About the conference

In October 2023, the council's public health division held a free virtual conference titled ‘Global Communities, Local Challenges, Partnership Solutions’.

The conference accelerated our work to tackle ethnic health inequalities and built on flagship partnership work with Lewisham Council on the Birmingham and Lewisham African and Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (BLACHIR) project.

The conference events focused on three priority themes:

  • shine a light on issues
  • celebrate and connect with communities
  • share emerging practice and learning

We delivered 37 webinars throughout the ‘Global Communities, Local Challenges, Partnership Solutions’ conference in collaboration with over 20 organisations.

These sessions linked to our local ICS strategy clinical priorities:

  • circulatory disease
  • infant mortality
  • respiratory disease
  • cancer
  • mental health

and our health and wellbeing board strategy priorities:

  • physical activity
  • food
  • mental wellbeing
  • healthy ageing
  • addictions

We held sessions that reflected the breadth of diversity across ethnic communities and highlighted intersectionality.

Five excellent ePosters were submitted to our ePoster competition, three of which were presented during the closing webinar.

In addition, many of the sessions were recorded to offer a legacy of the conference and to contribute to learning and action beyond the month of October. You can view a playlist of recorded webinars on the HealthyBrum Youtube Channel.

Everyone was welcome to participate in the conference and celebrate diverse ethnic communities as we tackled health inequalities together.
