A just transition

The inclusion of 'a just transition' in the climate emergency declaration recognises that action to prevent or adapt to climate change needs to prioritise frontline communities who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This means that the council will ensure that the city's transition to a net zero actively tackles existing inequalities.

This can be achieved by actions like improving home energy efficiency for those in fuel poverty, or developing green infrastructure for those most vulnerable to overheating and flooding. Additionally, a just transition means that the council will strive to listen to the voices of those seldom heard and make sure that public engagement plays an important role in policy making.
