Evidence of inequalities

There is very little routine data collected about veterans. This means there is limited reliable evidence about their health and wellbeing.

Reviews by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) show that most veterans face the same health and welfare issues as other people. Many adjust well to civilian life. However, a small number struggle.

This group may have complex mental and physical health needs. These are often made worse by other issues such as:

• social isolation
• crime
• housing problems
• low income

Local research

In 2019 to 2020, the council started a detailed assessment of veterans’ health and wellbeing. This work was paused during the COVID-19 outbreak.

We hope to publish the findings once the work resumes.
