Reporting a change in tenancy as a landlord or agent

When you need to tell us

If you are a landlord or agent who has had a tenant move in or out of your property, you must tell us as soon as possible. However, do not tell us about the change in tenancy more than 14 calendar days before the tenancy starts.

How to tell us

You can tell us about someone moving in or out of your property by using our service on Council Tax Online and scrolling down to ‘Are you a landlord or agent?’.

Before you start

Before you tell us about the change, make sure that you have the relevant details available.

We will need to know the:

  • contact details for yourself, such as your name and address
  • start or end date of the tenancy, if someone has moved in or out of your property
  • details of the tenant who has moved in or out of your property
  • Council Tax reference number of the property the tenant is moving in or out of (if you know it)
  • address to forward any correspondence to the tenant who has moved out
  • landlord’s details, if you are an agent
  • details of the agent managing your property (if you have one), if you are a landlord

If you are an agent who is newly managing the property, we may also ask to see a letter of authority.

What happens next

Once you report your change to us, we will issue you with a new bill for your property.
