Closing the road for an event
A street party or a public event
The main differences between a small street party and larger public event are:
- street parties:
- for residents/neighbours only
- publicity only to residents
- larger public events:
- anyone can attend
- external publicity (such as in newspapers, social media)
If your event is a street party you can submit an enquiry form a minimum of 6 weeks before your event. Read more about holding a street party.
Holding a public event
You will need to submit a Temporary Traffic TTRO request form to TMApprovals@birmingham.gov.uk
- TTRO requests must be submitted 8 weeks before your event.
- Closing a road under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order will cost £1286 for the first TTRO and £643 for future submissions of the same closure.
Further information is on our apply for a highways licence page.
Managing road closures
What you need to do:
- provide a method statement - explain how you will implement and manage the road closure
- engage with a Traffic Management Company if you need help to manage the road closure, diversions, and signage
- make sure road closures are always manned - there must be someone available at all times during the closure
- plan for emergency services access during the closure.
- signpost clear diversion routes to guide traffic
If public transport is affected, you must notify highways@nationalexpress.com
Suspending parking bays
We can suspend restrictions on parking bays if necessary for your event:
- costs are payable in advance of the suspension
- you must tell us at least 2 full working days in advance
If you need advice or support with your event, email us at eventsteam@birmingham.gov.uk. We will be happy to guide and support you in organising a successful and safe event.
