Highways Work Programmes

Please note: The Highways Works Programmes and change logs are presently unavailable, however we do provide weekly planned maintenance works on our Roadworks page.

Birmingham’s highway infrastructure includes 2,500km of road network, nearly 100,000 street lights, 76,000 trees and over 850 highway structures and bridges across the city.

Planning and approval of highway work programmes

An extensive condition survey of Birmingham’s roads is carried out each year. Work in the programmes is prioritised based on the resulting condition data, the general principle being ‘worst first’. These include the works programmes for services related to roads, footways, street lighting, trees, weed control, highway structures, traffic signals and tunnel refurbishment.

We then consult with elected members and other key stakeholders regarding the draft programmes.

Road access during resurfacing works

We hope you understand that we have to maintain the roads and appreciate your understanding during works.

Following resurfacing, vehicles are not able to drive over material while it is hot. The sections of road affected will therefore be entirely closed to all traffic. Most local access can be arranged if you speak to the gateman onsite (who will be stationed by the barriers at the end of road).

If you require special access please contact 0121 303 6644 and select option 3.

Pedestrian access will be maintained as well as access for emergency vehicles. The road closures are in place for your safety as well as the safety of our staff.
