Library opening hours during weather alerts
During hot and cold weather health alerts, some libraries may close or have different opening hours.
Contact libraries directly before you visit to confirm their opening hours.
Spring Hill library
Spring Hill library was temporarily closed in December 2022 for health and safety issues. In February 2025, Cabinet agreed to a new model for delivering community libraries, which approved the permanent closure of the library.
The Cabinet Committee Property declared the building surplus to the council's requirements and approved it for disposal.
Lambert Smith Hampton is currently marketing the property on behalf of the council for disposal on a long lease. Proposals for ongoing community use are welcome.
We are aware that the property has a Grade II* listing status; all enquiries should be directed to the Planning Department.
Temporary library closures
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by the following temporary closures.
Acocks Green library
Acocks Green library is closed due to unexpected health and safety issues caused by water entering the building.
The library will remain closed until the £3.9 million capital-funded library improvement and refurbishment, approved by the council in September 2025, begins in the summer of 2026.
While the library is closed, you can use the following libraries:
Balsall Heath library
Balsall Heath library is closed for major building and remodelling works, including the addition of a mezzanine floor.

The nearest libraries to Balsall Heath library are Kings Heath library and Sparkhill library.
Erdington library
The library remains closed for health and safety reasons.
You can use the following libraries instead:

A temporary Book Pick and Drop service is available from the Community Room beside the library.
Book Pick and Drop opening times:
- Tuesday, 9:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm
- Friday, 9:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Handsworth library
Handsworth library has reopened with a limited service.
Library of Birmingham
The Level 3 and Level 7 terraces are closed until further notice.
Tower Hill library
Tower Hill Library will be closed from Monday 7 September until Saturday 12 September 2026 due to water damage and no electricity. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Bank holiday closures
All libraries are closed on bank holidays.
