Compensare exhibition: the realities of supporting adopted children
A free exhibition at Eastside Projects explores how art reflects the challenges and hopes of adoptive families.
Compensare: For the Swallows We Weigh is a free exhibition by artist Marley Starskey Butler. It explores:
- the experiences of adoptive parents and foster carers
- how therapeutic play helps families build stronger relationships
Set against a backdrop of funding challenges and political decisions, the exhibition shows how these pressures affect families and the professionals who support them. Expect moments of reflection as you explore the space.
There’s also a linked programme of free events and workshops for everyone to join.
Compensare is a Latin word meaning “to counterbalance”. This idea runs through the work of Beacon Family Services, who use Theraplay® and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) to help families make sense of their world.
The exhibition combines mixed media art with hands-on activities.
It’s open Wednesday to Saturday, midday to 5:00pm, in spring.
Compensare is designed to:
- reflect and translate therapeutic practice into art
- prompt reflection and positive action to support adoptive families
- make visible the emotional and political landscapes that shape family support
