About the park

Rookery Park has connections to a momentous turning point in British history.

The park consists of land which formed the surrounding gardens of Rookery House in Erdington – previously known as Birches Green House. One of the famous inhabitants of the House was anti-slavery politician William Wilberforce, who is believed to have planned his successful campaigns to end slavery here in the 19th century.

After the house was bought to be used by the local council in the 1890s, its gardens were transformed into one of Erdington’s first parks.

Over the decades much work has been done to improve facilities and now visitors can play football and tennis, enjoy the children’s playground and even take a long walk around its perimeter.
