About the park

Award-winning Cannon Hill Park is one of the premier parks in Birmingham – offering a versatile range of things to see and do in a special family and community atmosphere.

Near to Edgbaston Cricket Ground, it covers around 250 acres and includes a new 36-hole mini-golf course, a fun park, sports areas and plenty of open space for visitors to walk, run, exercise and relax.

Around 120 acres of the greenspace has been set aside for conservation and woodland plantation making it a great place to appreciate and learn all about nature.

In addition, the park is home to the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Centre and MAC Birmingham, which features art galleries and exhibitions, cinema, theatre, dance and craft workshops throughout the year.

Cannon Hill Park is also great day out for school trips and other parties, who can book educational talks, pond dipping sessions and woodland exploration activities with the Park Ranger Service and get a real insight into how the natural world works.

The park was first opened to visitors in 1873 after being donated to the citizens of Birmingham by wealthy philanthropist Louisa Ryland to help boost the wellbeing and health of the local community.

It was designed by landscape architect T.J. Gibson – who also designed Battersea Park in London – and this can be best seen in the 80 acres of formal parkland at the heart of the green space. Notable features in this section include a listed bandstand and bridge.

The park is a focal point for community events. For example, a free 5-kilometre parkrun event is held in the park every Saturday morning and regularly attracts more than 750 runners each week; a 2-kilometre children’s park run takes place on Sunday mornings.

An ornamental lake is also a central focus. It can be used for fishing and visitors can hire swan-shaped pedalos for boating sessions.
