Billesley Common has rich history as public open space having first being mentioned in 1774 as ‘common wasteland’. Fast-forward nearly 250 years and it has transformed into a very popular recreational area with strong bonds to the local communities of Moseley and Yardley Wood.
As well as being a haven for wildlife and a magnet for walkers, joggers, people with dogs and families, it also has links to the local sporting scene. Moseley Rugby Football Club lease part of the common for their pitches, clubhouse and 5,000 all-seater stand. Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre is also based at the park and has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a gym and other facilities. These can be hired and tennis lessons can be booked online.
Next to the common is City of Birmingham Indoor Bowls Club, which has produced many top competitors over the years. The southern section of the Common is dominated by trees and well set out pathways. Haunch Brook also flows through this area. It is a fascinating area, which attract many species of birds, and is a real treat for those who love urban hideaways.
