About the park

Balsall Heath Park is a large, grass covered area which has served as a public open space since the end of the 19th century.

It was originally part of a large swathe of agricultural land that covered Balsall Heath up to the mid 1800s. From 1850 onwards rapid expansion of housing between the city of Birmingham and Moseley village to the south saw the landscape dramatically change.

To help preserve green space for the health and wellbeing of the growing community, a number of parks were created – they included Balsall Heath Park, which opened in 1894.

More than a century on, it is still very popular. Its tarmac paths make it a place to jog or walk and facilities such as a basketball court and children’s play area help it appeal to younger people and families. There is also an extensive grass area, which is often used for impromptu games of football or cricket.
