The Library's oldest document

The librarys oldest document scan

The Library's oldest document is almost 900 years old - a time when Birmingham was just a village. It is an agreement between the Bishop and Earl of Worcester.

Written in Latin, the document is on parchment, made from sheep- or goat-skin. The holes you can see were probably caused by parasites!

Reference: Agreement, c1140 MS 3444/9/12
