The card depicts a female figure holding an auctioneer's hammer in one had and balanced scales in the other which seems to imply that T Lucas wanted to be seen as a fair and honest trader.
The card reads:
'Where goods of every kind are received from all parts of Great Britain and sold by auction on commission at easy terms every week, being previously advertised and printed catalogues distributed, describing the articles to be offered for sale, and the amount or balance remitted or paid on demand. Also sales of estates, household furniture, farming stock on the lowest terms."
A separate scroll at the feet of the figure reads:
"Cash advance on goods till sold'.
To the right of this are a stack of rolls on what seems to be inscribed "Irish Linen".
The image on the card is attributed to I Pye, an engraver of Alcester Street, Deritend, Birmingham
On trade card 331 (Box 05) "Miscellaneous addresses In New Street" (which also appears earlier in this gallery) J P Lucas "Auctioneer, Appraiser & Land Surveyor, Commissioner for taking Special Bail" is listed as trading just round the corner from T Lucas, at 110 New Street. A possible indicator of different members of the same family trading in the same business either co-operatively or even competitively.
