Fives courts

Fives courts photograph

Photographed here in 1935 these courts were specifically designed for playing Fives at King Edward VI Grammar School. Fives is similar to some racquet sports such as squash, where the ball is hit against the wall often with the hand (a bunch of fives).

Note that the courts have 3 sides along with a slight step in the centre of the court. Also the courts have an obstruction on the left wall often known as a buttress. These distinctive features indicate that the courts are for the variation of the game known as Eton Fives.
