This song is sold and sung by F V St. Clair at all leading Music halls and the entire profits of the sale of the same is given to the relief funds. Over £1000 already raised. No 234 with tonic Sol-Fa. This song may be sung in public without fee or license except at Music Halls or Theatres. Considered to be the first recruiting song of the First World War. Like many acts during this period F V St Clair performed in conjunction with recruiting authorities. War news would be incorporated in between variety acts, usually followed by a song like 'Follow the Drum' which had the effect of inspiring men to volunteer. Also, according to a play bill for Leeds Hippodrome, dated 14 September 1914, 'Follow the Drum' had " already raised about £100 for the National Relief Funds by the sale of this great war chorus song".
