"The play which I am to have the honour of reading to you this evening, Ladies and Gentlemen is the tragedy of Othello. It will be considerably shortened by the omission of several exceptionable passages and I shall rely on your often experienced indulgence to excuse any defects which your taste and judgement may discern either in the arrangement or the execution of so arduous an attempt.
