Commentary upon the late "New Police Act" (1841)

Commentary upon the late new police act 1841 cartoon

The Metropolitan Police Act of 1839 gave additional powers to the police force in an attempt to reclaim and control the noisy and undisciplined streets of London. The new regulations meant that many street entertainments, including Punch, were removed from public spaces in the capitol. The uprooted Punch showmen had to travel to find new audiences, at fashionable seaside resorts and fairs.
