Punch and judy c 1827 1873 illustration

In this picture we see the Professor's assistant blowing a trumpet, announcing the arrival of the puppet show. Travelling puppet showmen took their shows around the country, visiting villages, wakes and fairs. Bartholomew Fair was the largest and most famous of them all, which took place in late August and attracted a huge variety of performers and thousands of visitors.
