Sing a song for sixpence (1880)

Sing a song for sixpence 1880 illustration

Sing a song for sixpence,
A pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing,
Oh wasn’t that a dainty dish,
To set before the King?

Randolph Caldecott (1846 to 1886) was one of the most influential children’s book illustrators of the 19th century. His most popular and famous works were the collection of picture books he produced for children between 1877 to 1886 based on traditional rhymes and tales. Caldecott released two picture books each year just in time for Christmas, priced at one shilling each.
