Mothers

Mothers cover

High Street, Erdington.

Mothers was a club in the late 1960s. It was above a furniture store called Dale Forty and a men's outfitters called Brookes Brothers. It began life as The Carlton Ballroom. The club hosted national pop acts as well as local stars. The Moody Blues used it as a rehearsal room. As the music scene developed in the 1960s, the management wanted to book rock acts and changed the name of the club to suit its new direction.

During its time it saw many famous names of the time perform there like Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues, The Faces, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, The Who, Free, Traffic (who made their debut at the club), Muddy Waters, Elton John, King Crimson, Yes and Pink Floyd who recorded part of their live album Ummagumma there. Well known DJ John Peel also championed the club, as well as appearing there.

Mothers opened on 9 August 1968 and closed on 3 January 1971.
