December (1871)

December 1871 illustrated verse

Where is the English girl or boy
Who does not hail, with gleeful joy,
This last month of the year?

Though dark the sky, and keen the air,
And all beside is brown and bare,
The holly green is here.

And pleasant it is, when bleak without,
Its glossy boughs to hang about,
Our winter homes to cheer!

Its clusters red of berries bright
Shine in the cheerful fire-light,
Which burneth warm and clear.

And pleasant Summer fruit, to see
The laden boughs of the Christmas-tree
For thoughts of love are near! (Ann Gilbert)
