birmingham - open for business
Transportation development, roadworks, and temporary closures

section from a plan

Birmingham is constantly changing!

We are working all the time, planning & building, to make your life easier as you travel around & into the city - be it on foot, bike, car, bus, or train - planning, consulting, & building.

Our Transportation Strategy teams carry out the work of implementing the long-term strategies developed by our Policy teams, in accordance with cabinet priorities & the Local Transport Plan, by turning those ideas into detailed proposals for consultation & construction.

In this section you can see how we intend to develop Birmingham's transportation network over the years, using the links on the left to view each individual proposal, whatever stage it is at.

From time-to-time we also need to carry out shorter term road closures for work such as resurfacing or for events; information about these works can be found below:

Temporary planned closures

Aldridge Road Carriageway closure for Resurfacing Works
Dates: Sunday 31 August 2008 - Sunday 14 September 2008

Motorists are advised of road closure for the resurfacing of Aldridge Road (A453) Perry Common.

During the daytime the road will be fully open. The roadwork will be carried out overnight from 8:00pm – 6:00am, Sunday night to Friday night, with no road closure on Saturday night.

The closure will take place from Tamebridge industrial estate, to Kingstanding / College Road Junction, on both sides of the dual carriageway.

The work will be done in four phases, with four separate diversions, over the two week period. Advanced warning signs have been put in place and signs now include the times of the closures.

We apologise to drivers for any inconvenience experienced as a result of these road closures.

The Conservative Party Conference
Dates: 28 September 2008 - 1 October 2008

The Conservative Party Conference will be taking place at the International Convention Centre. During the conference a traffic management plan will be in operation as follows:

Vehicle traffic restrictions will apply to Broad Street between Paradise Circus and Gas Street and Cambridge Street between Brindley Drive and Kingston Row. There will be pedestrian only access to the section of Bridge Street adjacent to the Hyatt hotel (at the junction with Broad Street).

Vehicle access to all other roads will be maintained at all times but the access route to the length of Broad Street between Gas Street and Sheepcote Street will be via Berkley Street only

Signed alternative routes for through traffic between Five Ways island and Paradise Circus island will be available via the Ring Road and either the A457 Sandpits / Parade or Bath Row / Holloway Head / Suffolk Street Queensway.

In the week before the conference, some overnight traffic restrictions will be in operation. The most significant of these will be an overnight restriction on traffic in the section of Broad Street between Gas Street and Paradise Circus from 22.00 hours on Thursday 25 September until 05.00 hours on Friday 26 September. Subsequent to this, on Friday 26 September and Saturday 27 September there will be some localised road width restrictions in Broad Street due to the presence of conference infrastruture in the vicinity of the ICC.

All infrastructure will be removed and traffic operation back to normal by the early hours of Thursday 2 October.

With the exception of the ICC Mall and the canal tow path immediately adjacent to the ICC there will not be any restrictions on pedestrian movements during the conference and all businesses will be open as usual.

M6 Junction 6 Salford Circus repairs
Dates: April 2008 - October 2009

The Highways Agency are undertaking a project to repair eight concrete crossbeams that support the carriageway above the roundabout at Salford Circus. Four of these crossbeams are sited within the sunken pedestrian area and four on the inner paved section of the roundabout. Steelwork will be erected to support the carriageway above whilst the repairs are being carried out. The road markings around the roundabout will be altered and a 20mph speed limit will be imposed for the duration of the repairs.

You can read more information on the project on the Highways Agency website.
