Funding awarded to Birmingham to help those affected by alcohol

Published: Wednesday, 24th April 2019

Efforts in Birmingham to increase the number of people accessing free support for alcohol problems have received a boost following a funding award from Public Health England

Birmingham City Council and the charity Change Grow Live (CGL) have been awarded a share of a £6m capital fund administered by Public Health England and designed to enable service providers and local authorities to increase access to alcohol treatment, with a focus on helping parents and rough sleepers.

£749,971 has been awarded by Public Health England, which will be used to help people and communities affected by alcohol in Birmingham, following a CGL bid supported by the city council.

In total, 23 projects across the country have been awarded funds by Public Health England following a call for bids earlier this year.

Sian Warmer, Head of Services for Change Grow Live Birmingham said: “Walking into a Change Grow Live services can be a life changing moment. If this was your parent, child or someone you love, you’d want to know they were getting the help that they needed to change their lives. In partnership with Birmingham City Council, that’s what we’re hoping to achieve with this funding.”

Cllr Paulette Hamilton, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “We need to protect the most vulnerable in society from the harm that can be caused by alcohol abuse, and there are groups that can be particularly affected including children and rough sleepers.

“This funding will help support local solutions that can really turn people’s lives around and make a difference to those most at risk.”
