School streets

School streets are places where we put children and families first. and keep them safe and healthy by encouraging walking, scooting and cycling to school. We want every school in Birmingham to be a School Streets. There are a range of campaign resources available to support the different aspects of this:

  • Keep Clear School Streets – campaign resources to address school gate parking, supported by parking enforcement visits.
  • Slow Down School Streets – a toolkit originally developed for the 20mph pilot that addresses speeding concerns, along with possible traffic calming measures
  • Switch Off School Streets – a new toolkit with resources to help schools to run an ‘anti-idling’ campaign. To launch our new Switch Off Toolkit and to tie in with World Poetry Day on 21 March, we’re inviting schools to get creative and come up with your own Switch Off themed poem. Please download further information and entry form.
  • Car Free School Streets – roads outside schools closed to traffic at the start and end of the school day, helping to reduce congestion and improve air quality at the school gates, making it easier and safer to walk or cycle to school.
