Birmingham road safety strategy

Road safety in Birmingham is improving, but there is still more we can do to make our roads safer for everyone.

A Road Safety Strategy for Birmingham has been developed. It sets out an action plan to reduce the number and severity of road traffic accidents, with a focus on the most vulnerable road users in the city.

Our aim is to create a safer, healthier, greener city.

The strategy is a partnership project and the action plan will be delivered by the Birmingham Road Safety Partnership, which includes key partners, West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service, community organisations, and third sector organisations such as RoSPA. The action plan sets out plans for:

Safer roads

  • Considering all road users and providing for the most vulnerable (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, 16 to 24 year-olds and children) when maintaining or making changes to our road network.
  • Understanding where accidents are happening in the city and seeking to address problems.
  • Addressing speeding by reducing speed limits and trialling digital speed cameras.

Safer people

  • Providing education, training and campaigns on key road safety issues including walking, cycling, driver behaviour, motorcycle safety and large vehicle/HGV awareness.
  • Targeting the delivery of road safety information to the people and places where it is most needed.

Safer vehicles

  • Making sure that the vehicles on our roads are safe and fit for purpose.
  • Working with partners to tackle unsafe driving practices including speeding, not wearing seatbelts, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, using a mobile phone and driving without insurance.

A Road Safety Strategy for Birmingham is part of the Birmingham Connected vision for the future of transport in Birmingham, working towards a safer, healthier, greener city with a reliable integrated transport system which supports our growing population and economy.
