The UK’s railways support 1.25 billion passenger journeys per year and growing levels of rail freight. Railways connect people to jobs and businesses to markets in a way that’s good for the environment and reduces road congestion.
However, capacity is almost full. The government is proposing to provide this rail capacity though a new High Speed Rail Network. HS2 will reduce Birmingham to London journey times to 49 minutes, and phase two would reduce travel times to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester.
