Longbridge Area Action Plan

The Story of the Longbridge Area Action Plan LAAP

At the closure of MG Rover on 8 April 2005, the works employed 6500 highly skilled men and women resourcing an estimated supply chain employing 27,000 people, sourcing from over 500 suppliers worldwide and spending an annual material budget of £1.2 billion. The loss almost overnight of the Longbridge Works was a devastating blow for local people and the West Midland’s economy. The Plan is the start of a new chapter in the history of Longbridge.

The Longbridge Area Action Plan sets out the land use framework and proposals for the regeneration of the former MG Rover plant site at Longbridge. The proposals include plans for 10,000 jobs, over 1,450 new homes built to high environmental standards, a new local centre to provide a wide range of retail, leisure, commercial and community facilities and a series of public transport and highway improvements. The overall aim of the plan is to create a truly sustainable and well designed community.

The local community and stakeholders were consulted on Issues and Options in 2006 and on the Preferred Options in 2007. The responses were fed into the Submission Document which was issued to the Secretary of State in March 2008.

The Examination in Public was held in October and December 2008 and the Inspector issued her report in February 2009. The AAP was found to be sound and was adopted by the City Council as Planning Policy on 7 April 2009 and by Bromsgrove District Council on 29 April 2009.
