Archaeology in Birmingham
Birmingham's archaeological remains are recognised for their national importance and we work to protect them through the planning process. This work sometimes drastically changes our view of Birmingham's past.
These pages explain how we protect the City's wealth of archaeological remains and tell you about some of the most important sites and most recent discoveries, including new information about Birmingham's Roman Fort (Metchley), and excavations as part of The Bullring redevelopment which uncovered new information about the origins of the city centre.
Information about archaeological sites and finds in Birmingham, is held in the Sites and Monuments Record.
Some of the links within these pages will take you to a PDF document. To view them you will need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available free of charge from their Website. For more information please visit our Guide to Attachments.
