Chamberlain Awards 2009 - Rewarding Excellence

Chamberlain Awards 2009
Rewarding Excellence in the Workplace

Message from Councillor Alan Rudge
Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources

2009 is the fifth year of the Chamberlain Awards Birmingham City Council's first corporate recognition scheme which aims to honour and reward employees who are dedicated to delivering excellent services to our citizens.

The scheme which is managed through the Corporate Human Resources team is named after Joseph Chamberlain, one of Birmingham's most distinguished civic leaders. Under his leadership Birmingham was described as the best-governed city in the world. Today we remain dedicated to providing quality services to the public and business alike.

Birmingham City Council is the largest employer in the West Midlands Region. We employ over 59,000 workers to deliver high quality services to residents and businesses and when they do it well it pays to reward their achievements. Recognising good work improves staff motivation and increases productivity.

The 18th century French philosopher Voltaire understood the importance of recognition when he said:

'Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.'

The Chamberlain Awards fits in with our Human Resources strategies to raise performance, increase motivation and share best practice so that we so that we can have one of the best performing local Authorities in the UK.

Councillor Alan Rudge,
Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources
