Five Ways Underpass Closure

Five Ways underpass will close to all traffic from Monday 3 June when the next phase of the Birmingham Westside Metro extension gets underway. It will remain closed until 2021.

To keep people moving during these works we will be making temporary road traffic changes including introducing new bus lanes and traffic lights to give buses priority. You’ll still be able to get to where you need to go but roads and public transport will be busier, so you’ll need to plan ahead and leave more time for your journey.

For more information, maps and help planning your journey while the work takes place, visit the WM Network website.

  • Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel along Hagley Road, you’ll need more time for your journey to take account of the closure at Five Ways underpass.
  • Use public transport wherever possible. This is to reduce congestion on key roads in and out of the city centre.
  • Travel off peak. Buses and roads will be quieter if you are able to travel ‘off peak’. The busiest time to travel during weekdays is usually before 9:30am and after 3:30pm.
  • Think about your options. Five Ways roundabout remains open, but will be busier than normal so consider using Google Maps or SatNav to plan an alternative route.
  • Consider car sharing. Sharing your journey with friends, family or colleagues will reduce the amount of cars on the road.
  • If you work, speak to your employer about whether there is any flexibility in your hours or times you could avoid travelling altogether, such as working from home.

The Birmingham Westside Metro extension is part of a bigger plan to improve public transport and connectivity across the West Midlands in preparation for HS2. To find out more about our plans to extend the Metro network please visit the Midland Metro Alliance website.
