Tonight the exterior facade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up green and red in support of Bangladesh Freedom 50 celebration finale.

From the Freedom 50 website:

Freedom 50 is a national initiative with individuals and organisations that have come together to form a collective to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.

Through Freedom 50, key events that led to the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 will be recognised together with the role that British Bangladeshis played in the UK.

Bangladeshi men settled in the UK in sizeable numbers during the post war period, and were joined by their families in the 70s and 80s. We now have fourth and fifth generations of Bangladeshi people in the UK. First and second generations have lived through the liberation war and have a collective memory of the events. However, many young people of Bangladeshi heritage don’t have the same memory and share very different feelings for the country. Through our various events we hope to educate, entertain and connect people to the best of their Bengali heritage. Our national bike ride will help raise funds to support vulnerable children across Bangladesh, where most needed.

We anticipate that our events will draw a wide audience from those of Bangladeshi heritage and beyond.

Freedom 50 is non-partisan.
