Why I’ve applied to be a Games volunteer
With volunteering applications to join the Commonwealth Collective still open, Jane Clarkin, a project co-ordinator at Birmingham City Council, talks about her volunteering experiences and why she has applied to be a volunteer at Birmingham.
What exciting times ahead! I’m really hoping to be a volunteer at the Games, and I have to confess that I still wear my uniform from when I volunteered at the Birmingham 2018 World Indoor Athletics. To this day, whenever I wear the t-shirt, people always ask me about it, which is lovely.
Uniform aside, it would be fair to say that I’ve got the volunteering bug. In 2003 and 2018, I was a volunteer at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham and both of those experiences were fantastic. I really felt part of the event, and to this day I’m still in touch with a couple of people that I manned the transport desk with.
Volunteering gives a brilliant team experience – you definitely get a feeling that you’re all in it together, it’s such great teamwork. A friend of mine was a volunteer at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and she was just totally buzzing about her experiences in Glasgow. She literally couldn’t stop talking about it, and her excitement at being involved made me really want to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games myself.
So back in 2017 when Birmingham - my home city - were awarded the Games, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. As I’m writing this blog, I’ve submitted my application form, which was very easy to complete - fingers crossed I am successful!
If I become part of the Commonwealth Collective, I don’t mind what role I’m assigned to as long as I’m helping - and giving athletes, officials and visitors to the city that friendly Birmingham welcome!
