There’s something special in the air right now

On day seven of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Craig Cooper, Birmingham City Council’s Commonwealth Games Programme Director, reflects on the Games so far.

Well what can I say! The first seven days of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been beyond brilliant and I don’t think anyone is going to disagree with me on this one.

I could go on with endless superlatives to describe the Games so far but there is just something special in the air across this wonderful bold city right now.

The crowds that flocked to see the Triathlon and Marathon events was a sight to behold and the events wonderfully displayed the suburbs of Birmingham and the beauty of Sutton Park.

Our communities are certainly playing their part in embracing and celebrating the Games. From the fantastic Neighbourhood Festival Sites to activities such as Commonwealth themed garden fetes in Tile Cross – it has been truly heart-warming to see the positive impact these Games are having on our residents.

Local businesses are booming and the streets are packed with people visiting Birmingham for the first time. The bull in Centenary Square is probably the biggest tourist attraction in the UK right now!

The love for Birmingham is now being felt around the world and we should all feel enormously proud of our city.

We’ve still got four days left of Birmingham 2022, so let’s savour every moment.
