Cemetery extension opened at Sutton Coldfield site

Published: Monday, 3rd September 2018

12,000 additional burial plots have today (3 September) been officially opened at Sutton New Hall Cemetery.

This investment is significant and will provide sufficient burial land in Birmingham for the next 18 years for those communities who wish to be buried in that part of the city. It has been designed to meet the needs of all communities that wish to be buried at Sutton New Hall Cemetery.

The cemetery will incorporate a natural burial area, as well as two separate children’s burial areas. Floodlighting has also been installed to enable burials to take place during the darker winter evenings.

The cemetery was opened by the Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, Cllr Sharon Thompson who said, “At a time when many local authorities are running out of new burial land, Birmingham City Council has made a significant investment of £8.5 million to ensure that its citizens continue to have access to burial facilities. Without this development, within a few years there would be no burial land in the north of the city.”
