Birmingham reaffirms commitment to being a City of Sanctuary during Refugee Week 2026
Birmingham City Council marks Refugee Week by reaffirming its commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive City of Sanctuary, as it launches its renewed City of Sanctuary Strategy and Action Plan.
This year’s theme, “Courage”, recognises the everyday strength of people who have been forced to flee their homes, while also calling on communities to show the courage to welcome, connect and stand in solidarity.
Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
As a recognised City of Sanctuary since 2015, Birmingham has a long history of supporting people seeking safety, through resettlement programmes, local partnerships and services that help individuals rebuild their lives and contribute to the city.
The newly approved strategy sets out how the council and its partners will continue to create a city where people from refugee and migrant communities are supported to integrate, thrive and feel that they belong.
Throughout the week, the council will be highlighting migrant-led organisations, sharing stories of courage from local communities and encouraging residents to take part in “Simple Acts” that foster connection and understanding.
Councillor Jane Baston, Cabinet Member for Equalities Communities & Social Justice, said: “Birmingham has always been a city built on compassion, diversity and resilience. Refugee Week is an opportunity to reflect on the courage shown by those forced to flee their homes, and to recognise the strength they bring to our communities.
“Our new City of Sanctuary Strategy reaffirms our commitment to ensuring Birmingham remains a place of safety, dignity and opportunity for all. We are proud to stand in solidarity with refugees and to work alongside our partners to build a city where everyone feels welcome and able to thrive.”
Residents, organisations and partners are encouraged to get involved by attending events, supporting local groups, and taking part in simple acts of welcome and kindness.
