Support for sexual and reproductive health

One of the mandated public health services we are responsible for is commissioning sexual and reproductive health services.

This includes the provision of testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. It does not include infertility treatment or HIV treatment and care.

Umbrella

We commission sexual and reproductive health services from Umbrella, which is a partnership of organisations providing:

  • contraception - free condoms, emergency contraception and short and long-acting contraception
  • testing and treatment for STIs which includes access to ‘at home STI testing’
  • psychosexual Services
  • walk-in clinics
  • provision of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) - to stop those at the very highest risk from contracting the HIV virus
  • access to testing and treatment through a network of over 200 GPs and pharmacies across the city

Umbrella works in partnership with the Rape and Sexual Violence Project (RSVP) for anyone who has experienced rape, sexual assault and/or abuse.

They also work with Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid for anyone disclosing domestic abuse.

The Umbrella service is non-judgmental and for people of all ages, genders and orientations.

Visit the Umbrellla website to find the right service for you.

The Birmingham and Solihull sexual and reproductive health strategy 2023 to 2030 sets out our themes, priorities and approach to meeting local sexual health needs.

The strategy explains how we will help citizens have safe and positive sexual experiences that are free from:

  • coercion
  • discrimination
  • violence

It also sets out how we will respond to rising rates of sexually transmitted infections and improve the reproductive health of our citizens.
