Safer School Journeys
The Safer School Journeys programme helps make streets around schools safer, healthier and more welcoming for pupils, families and the wider community.
The programme is funded through the Clean Air Zone and supports schools to:
- improve road safety
- improve local air quality
- encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling
How the programme works
We work with selected schools to identify local road safety concerns and co-design improvements around the school.
Improvements may include:
- safer crossings and junctions
- traffic calming measures
- pavement protection
- street greening
Pupils, staff, parents and residents help shape the changes so they reflect each school's needs and priorities.
The programme supports Birmingham's Road Harm Reduction Strategy.

Taking part in the programme can help schools:
- improve safety and wellbeing across the school community
- support active and sustainable travel
- contribute to a cleaner, greener Birmingham

All schools in Birmingham can also benefit from the Modeshift STARS scheme.
Modeshift STARS provides support and resources to help schools promote safer, greener and healthier travel.
