Overview

Transforming the city centre is one of the big moves outlined in the Birmingham Transport Plan (October 2021).

To achieve this, fundamental changes to how the city centre is accessed were proposed as part of a city centre ‘traffic cells initiative’.

Work is underway on the next stage of the initiative which will look at movement strategies for each cell and the area as a whole. A new signage plan will be developed and introduced to reflect changes and ensure road users are able to get where they need to as efficiently as possible.

The project is currently in the development phase and residents and businesses will be engaged with to assist and contribute along the way. This page will be updated regularly with project developments.

The starting point for the latest project is summarised below:

  • the area within the A4540 Middleway will eventually be divided into six city centre segments/cells
  • the map below shows the six proposed city centre segments and the main roads that give access to each one
  • the A4540 Middleway provides the boundary, and the City Core is in the middle, with access by active travel and public transport prioritised
