Winter flu vaccination - free voucher for Birmingham Schools

This year's flu vaccination programme aims to protect people from serious illness and reduce hospitalisations from flu.

Research shows that if you get both flu and coronavirus (COVID-19) or other respiratory viruses at the same time, you may be more seriously ill. So, vaccination is important.

Eligible adults can get the free flu vaccine at their GP or pharmacy.

The NHS will contact you directly if you are eligible and invite you to book an appointment.

The flu vaccine is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications if you meet one of the following criteria:

This year the flu vaccine is being offered on the NHS to:

  • children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2023
  • eligible school-aged children, that is to say, from reception to year 11
  • pregnant women
  • those aged 65 and older
  • those in long-stay residential care homes
  • carers in receipt of a carer's allowance, or the main carer of an older or disabled person
  • household contacts of immunocompromised individuals
  • frontline staff and social care staff

The flu vaccine is also being offered to those in a clinical risk group such as:

  • chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, such as asthma (requires continuous or repeated use of inhaled or systemic steroids or with previous exacerbations requiring hospital admission), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchitis.
  • chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
  • chronic kidney disease at stage 3, 4 or 5
  • chronic liver disease
  • chronic neurological disease, such as Parkinson's disease or motor neurone disease
  • diabetes
  • splenic dysfunction or asplenia
  • a weakened immune system due to illness (such as HIV/AIDS) or treatment (such as cancer treatment)
  • morbidly obese (defined as a BMI of 40 and above)
  • a learning disability

If you do not qualify for an NHS free flu vaccination and are a staff member of a Birmingham School, you can claim a free voucher for the flu vaccine under the Birmingham City Council free voucher scheme.
