Support for babies and pre-school children with Special Educational Needs
The Early Years Inclusion Support (EYIS) team provide specialised teaching and advice for babies and preschool children who have a significant difficulty in their early learning and development, and at least one other area of need from the following:
- Communication and interaction
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Physical and/or sensory needs
Support is provided alongside the statutory Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan process in two different ways:
Babies and pre-school children who are at home with their parent/carers: receive support in their learning and development from the Early Support Service (ESS) to help prepare them for when they move on to nursery or school. This will include advice and support about Educational Health and Care Assessment where appropriate.
Babies and pre-school children in an Early Years setting or nursery: receive support from the Area SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) Team. These teachers and early support workers promote inclusion by providing training for those who work directly with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disability. There are also Early Support Service (ESS) teachers in each of the five Child Development Centres.
