Where?

The descriptions for each city centre segment are based on the current proposals.

Jewellery Quarter

The Jewellery Quarter segment is bounded by Camden Street and Parade to the south west and B4114 New Town Row to the north east. Camden Street, Parade and B4114 New Town Row are not part of this segment.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • Camden Street
  • Pope Street (exit only)
  • Carver Street
  • Pitsford Street
  • B4100 Great Hampton Street
  • Well Street
  • Summer Lane

To create this segment, changes to traffic movements were made on a temporary basis in 2020. The changes were then made permanent in 2022 following public consultation.

A final piece of work to make Albion Street a pedestrian and cycle zone is being finalised for implementation later in 2022.

Knowledge Quarter

The Knowledge Quarter segment is bounded by B4114 New Town Row to the west and Curzon Street to the south.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • B4114 New Town Row
  • A38M Aston Expressway and Aston Road
  • Great Lister Street
  • A47 Jennens Road
  • Curzon Street

On the western boundary, changes to traffic movements from B4114 New Town Row were made on a temporary basis in 2020, then made permanent in 2022 following public consultation.

The southern boundary is created by the new HS2 rail line and station. Work to build HS2 is ongoing; the traffic arrangements which for the segment boundary are already in place.

Eastside (Digbeth)

The Eastside segment is bounded by Curzon Street to the north and Cheapside to the south. Curzon Street is not part of this segment; some sections of Cheapside are part of this segment.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • Montague Street
  • Great Barr Street
  • Little Barr Street
  • Westley Street
  • Adderley Street
  • Coventry Road
  • Camp Hill

The northern boundary is created by the new HS2 rail line and station. Work to build HS2 is ongoing; the traffic arrangements which for the segment boundary are already in place.

The southern boundary is not yet in place, but we have carried out the public consultation. A bus gate is being added to Upper Dean Street in June/July 2022. The rest of the road changes are expected to take place later in 2022.

Southside (Highgate)

The Southside segment is bounded by Cheapside to the east and Bristol Street to the west. Some sections of Cheapside are part of this segment; Bristol Street is not part of this segment.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • New Moseley Road (exit only)
  • Moseley Road (entrance only)
  • Leopold Street
  • Upper Conybere Street (exit only)
  • Frank Street
  • Horton Square
  • St Luke’s Road
  • Sherlock Street

The eastern boundary is not yet in place, but we have carried out the public consultation. A bus gate is being added to Upper Dean Street in June/July 2022. The rest of the road changes are expected to take place later in 2022.

The western boundary is not currently operating, with traffic able to move between the Southside and Westside segments. Further public consultation will take place before changes to traffic movement are made here.

Westside

The Westside segment is bounded by Bristol Street to the east and Broad Street to the north west.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • A38 Bristol Street
  • Spring Street
  • Elvetham Road North
  • Wheeleys Lane (exit to ring road, enter only by crossing the ring road from Wheeleys Road)
  • Bath Row
  • Tennant Street
  • Broad Street (note that some sections of Broad Street are now restricted to public transport only)

The eastern boundary is not currently operating, with traffic able to move between the Southside and Westside segments. Further public consultation will take place before changes to traffic movement are made here.

The north western boundary is being created as part of the Edgbaston Metro extension works.

Convention Quarter

The Convention Quarter segment is bounded by Broad Street to the south and Camden Street and Parade to the north. Broad Street is not part of this segment.

For general traffic, the segment is accessible from the A4540 ring road via:

  • Friston Avenue
  • Morville Street
  • St Vincent Street West
  • Ledsam Street
  • King Edwards Road
  • B4135 Summer Hill Road
  • Camden Street (entrance only)

The southern boundary is being created as part of the Edgbaston Metro extension works.

To create this northern boundary, changes to traffic movements were made on a temporary basis in 2020. The changes were then made permanent in 2022 following public consultation. A final piece of work to make Albion Street a pedestrian and cycle zone is being finalised for implementation later in 2022.
