Overview

The Cultural Development Service supports high-quality arts activities, which give people the chance to enjoy and shape culture in their neighbourhood, with their community.

We fund activities which:

  • are relevant and accessible
  • involve residents in their creation
  • strengthen a sense of place and local identity

Investing in arts and culture has important social and wellbeing impacts on our citizens. We also consider how culture boosts the economy and attracts more people to our local centres.

We work closely with many cultural networks and other funders to make sure that cultural activities have the best positive impact on our communities in Birmingham.

Budget challenges across the council mean that many of our past funding programmes have had to be either cut back or discontinued. However, we continue to explore new ways to make cultural offerings available to all citizens across the city. This involves offering or seeking funding to ensure that every citizen, whether they are artists, participants, or audiences, feels they are a valued part of the creative life of our city.
