Working as a pedlar

A pedlar’s certificate allows you to trade on the streets or door to door, as long as you trade on foot and carry your goods with you.

Unlike street traders, the police and not the council issue pedlars' certificates and regulate pedlars.

Apply for a pedlar’s certificate

You can apply for a pedlar’s certificate at your local police station. You need to take:

  • 2 photos of you
  • a form of identity, e.g. a passport or driving licence
  • proof of your address
  • details of a referee

The certificate costs £12.25 and lasts 1 year.
